To the Honourable United States of America President George W. Bush

Dear Mr. President,

A few days ago you closed a crucial chapter of your presidency last night by declaring victory in Iraq aboard an aircraft carrier returning combat forces to the United States.

I watched and listen to your speech that very night on an American TV channel live.

Thank you Mr. President, America and the allied forces for the victory in Iraq and for liberating the Iraqi people.

I know you are a very busy President and I have no idea if you got to read my first letter when the war started.

I proudly want to tell you that I got many wonderful responses from my mailing campaign.
I sent copies of my letter to 600 important email addresses around the world.

This included ALL political parties in the US (except the Nazi party). To 70 US Senators and the same number of US Congressman and Congresswoman. To the: presidentialprayerteam.org - To US soldiers on the website. American/German clubs and associations in the U.S. and in Germany.

To all German political parties, PM Toni Blair and PM John Howard in Australia.
It included many newspapers in the US, to all US and British Embassies in Germany, and the US Embassy in Vienna. I sent as well to other forums and friends.

On 2nd May 2003, I got an encouraging response from the spokesman for Ministerpresident Dr. Edmund Stoiber. As you well know he is the head of the German main opposition party, the CSU (Christian-Social Union of Bavaria). Mr. Stoiber, unfortunately lost last year October 2002 election, during the run up against chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

Here is the letter from the CSU (Christian-Social Union) spokesman, Dr. Hans-Eckhard Sommer:
English translation:

Dear Mr. Schawaller

Minister President Dr. Edmund Stoiber asked me to convey his thank to you for your e-mails from April 17th and May 1st. With great interest did he take note how much effort you made to put the image of Germany in the USA into a better light by writing to the American President. The reactions to your open letter which was published on the internet are remarkable.

Germany cannot do without the friendship and close partnership with the USA - also in the future!

With best wishes,

Dr. Hans-Eckhard Sommer

Sehr geehrter Herr Schawaller,

End of letter.

The very day the war started I felt so strongly it will be a short war. When at the end of the 21st day the statue of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad fell I couldn't hold back my tears, and I thanked God in heaven for this quick victory

Mr. President, today I'm glad I wrote as a private German citizen a letter to you.

You may have asked why I did this mailing campaign.

My answer is very simple: The relationship between your country and my country were deteriorated long before the war started, due to my German government handling this Iraq crisis.

I’ m an individual German and my intention is to contribute to repair the damage caused as good as I can.

Thank you for letting me express my thoughts to you.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Yours sincerely,
Wolfgang Schawaller

Hi Wolfgang,

Wow what a great article! How incredible! Sadly I could not get on to theAustralian web site....the international server is down. George Bush is aGodly man who reads the bible and prays for direction...his administrationhas not done much for refugees- given the state of affairs, however, theyhave done great things for the US as a whole. Are you a Christian or are you Jewish? I am a Born Again Christian and my best friend is a Jewish girlwho keeps Kosher. Would you mind if I share your letter with Gary and Dan -my bosses? They would be touched by your words. Dan is the head of the Refugee Council USA.

Blessings!
Helen

Betreff: Re: Iraq war

Dear Mr. Wolfgang Schawaller,

I can't tell you how much your letter on Iraq soothed my aching heart. I have been not just perplexed, but deeply disturbed that so much of Europe is obsessed with thinking that America is a greater threat to the world than Saddam Hussein. Are France and Germany so in love with moral relativism.
That they cannot make distinctions between good and evil or have they just made too many "deals with the devil" and can't back out. As an American who cherishes freedom and wishes all people to be free, I cannot understand "free" societies who are so willing to deny enslaved peoples a chance at freedom. What has happened to Europe, or has it been this way for a long time? It is so refreshing to hear you, a German, speak so eloquently about good and evil, and to understand the position of the US in trying to make the world free.
Not all problems should be solved with military action, but appeasement (the policy of France and Germany and much of the UN) can never bring about peace; it only prolongs the advent of war. I cannot understand how a continent that has been through two world wars, could have learned nothing about appeasement from that experience. Thank God, America did learn the lessons of those wars. We know we have to stop the tyrants before they do irreparable harm, and yet we are the ones that the Europeans think are the bad guys. I'm not the only American who doesn't understand the European attitude. In fact, right now, in American, French is a dirty word.
There are many groups organizing boycotts of French goods, and several restaurants are offering freedom fries instead of French fries. For some reason Americans are not as angry at the Germans. I guess we never expected too much from them. But there's a lot of anger at the French. Even my boss, who goes to France every year on vacation, said they won't go to France anymore and won't buy any more French perfume.

Anyway, I'm so glad to hear from you, who has a clear head about such things. It's probably because you are such an international person that you can see things from a broader perspective.

May God bless you, and maybe I can forgive all of Europe because of you.

Love,
Donna Howell

Wolfgang,

It's really nice to hear from you. I am fine and hope that you are doing well. Your letter is great. Recent events in Iraq are nothing other than astounding. It's a triumph over evil. But even here, when the war lasted more than one day, there was shrieking criticism against the president and the military. But what followed . . . amazing. We did what we should have done 12 years ago.

I have tremendous hope that we now have a president who will do what he promises to do, and won't change his mind when he is criticized. If so, then he may win the trust of the Palestinians and be able to secure real peace there. He may also be instrumental in the unification of Korea. It is a remarkable time.

By the way, I went with my father and two sons to Normandy in 1999. My father was a major in the U.S. Army and he landed on Utah beach in the morning of D-Day. He was the regimental beach control officer and was the first soldier of his regiment to hit the beach. He then had to stay on the beach until his entire regiment was ashore. He made it inland and was shot in the shoulder five days later. He was wounded three times in the war, but eventually made it to Germany. My father always admired Germany and believed that Hitler was a madman who had victimized Germany. That's how we were taught. He also served in the Korean war, and lived in Japan.
I was born there and my parents both loved that country too. Then I lived three years in Germany as a child. It's a great country. There really are no enemies. My father died two years ago at the age of 88 and was buried with full military honors in Arlington cemetary.

Best wishes to you.

Bill Lay

Dear Mr. Schawaller,

Thank you for your wonderful letter to President Bush.
I'm Sure that our President will feel the support that you give and be comforted.I am gratified to know that there are some in Europe who see what we are doing in Iraq as noble and righteous. I believe that our government has the highest aspirations and hopes for a liberated Iraq. We are not a perfect example to the world in many respects, but in this endeavor America's motive is pure and selfless. I fully support our President and the coalition fighting
for the liberation of Iraq. The world will be a better place if Iraq can form a stable and lasting representative government.

There are many Americans who feel that we are called as a nation to share with other nations all the freedoms and prosperity that we have enjoyed . Democracy and Capitalism are certainly not perfect systems but until something better comes along, we must promote and defend them. President Bush is very clear about his calling in life and responsibilities as the President of the United States Of America.
Most of us Americans are very proud to have such a President!

Thank you again for your letter of encouragement to President Bush!

Sincerely,
John Chisholm

Interesting. It should be noted, however, that our objections to going to war without a congressional declaration of war were constitutional, not a matter of policy. As Emmerich de Vattel set forth two centuries ago, there is a casus belli in humanitarian intervention.

I invite you and your colleagues to visit our website and study its contents. We have strong objections in principle to the prosecution of Gary Lauck, not because we support his messages, but because of the importance of protecting the free speech rights of everyone, even those with unpopular views, and because we cannot allow nation-states to extend extraterritorial
criminal jurisdiction onto the soil of other nations, especially for messages conveyed electronically, whether it be Germany onto the soil of the U.S. or vice versa. These are principles that Germans have not established in their Basic Law, and they need to be.

Vielen Dank.
